How the 50/50 Works in Wuthering Waves
The 50/50 decides whether you get the featured 5★ character or an off-banner one. Here's exactly how it works — and how to plan around it.
The 50/50 in one paragraph
When you pull a 5★ on a character event banner, the game flips a coin: 50% chance it's the featured rate-up character, 50% chance it's a character from the standard pool. If you lose that flip, the next 5★ you pull on any character event banner is guaranteed to be the featured character — no coin flip. After you get the guaranteed featured, the cycle resets to a fresh 50/50.
Win and lose scenarios
| Scenario | First 5★ | Next 5★ |
|---|---|---|
| Win 50/50 | Featured character | Back to 50/50 |
| Lose 50/50 | Standard 5★ character | Guaranteed featured |
| On guarantee | Featured character (100%) | Back to 50/50 |
The standard 5★ characters you can lose to are the ones on the permanent Tidal Chorus banner — including the starting roster and earlier permanent additions. A lost 50/50 is sometimes called "building pity for the next character" — because that guarantee is now banked.
The guarantee carries over — this is the important part
Both your pity counter and your guarantee state carry over between character event banners. Lost the 50/50 on the current banner? You can skip the rest of it, wait for the next character you actually want, and your first 5★ on that new banner is guaranteed to be the rate-up.
Worst case: 160 pulls
To guarantee a specific character from zero pity, budget for the worst case: lose the 50/50 at pull 80, then hit hard pity again — 160 pulls, 25,600 Astrite. The average cost is much lower (most players get the featured within 100–120 pulls), but the guarantee budget is what you should plan around if you can't afford to miss.
Your monthly Astrite income decides how realistic that budget is — a full F2P month funds roughly half a guarantee cycle, so plan one target character per month or skip banners strategically.
Does the weapon banner have a 50/50?
No. Weapon event banners in Wuthering Waves always give you the featured weapon as the 5★. There is no standard-weapon loss state, no "weapon 50/50", and no pity path that wastes your hard pity on an off-banner weapon. This is one of the friendliest weapon systems in the gacha space.
Strategy tips
- Bank the guarantee: if you're on a 50/50 and the current banner's featured character isn't a must-have, the smarter play is usually to save — your pity and guarantee both transfer.
- Check your pity before pulling: use the pity calculator to see your odds before committing Astrite.
- Never pull to zero on impulse: 160 pulls is the real cost of certainty; if your savings can't cover it, accept the coin flip or skip.
- Sequences are expensive: a duplicate (Sequence 1) of a character means winning the 50/50 again — budget a second 160-pull cycle before you commit.
